Chronicles of the Protectors of Velor

The Velorians

by SharonBest

Behold... a beautiful alien girl, a Velorian Protector by birth, a woman with the heart of a Warrior and the soul of a Scribe. A fabulous femme from a distant world, a woman of power and a woman of beauty. A woman whose slender fingers have the power to work steel and stone as easily as a sculptor works his soft clay, a woman of flight, unfettered by the laws of gravity.

A slender woman with hair and skin as soft as a kiss, yet a Girl of Steel who can deflect the cruelest of attacks from even the gentlest curves of her body. A woman so slim yet so powerful, her invulnerable figure resistant even to the nuclear fires of hell itself, a woman who can bathe in the fires of a volcano or frolic in the hot breath of a young sun, yet also a woman who is possessed of the most simple of human passions, her loving knowing no bounds. A woman of battle, yet a goddess of love. She is the ultimate warrior and the perfect lover, she is the paradox of steely power and gentle beauty.

A woman also with eyes so startlingly blue, so translucent, that no man can look away from her if she does not wish him to. A woman with eyes so bright that they can look into your very soul, eyes that can pull forth your deepest secrets. Powerful eyes that can look a mile deep through solid rock, yet eyes that can shine brightly with the warmth of her desire.

Deadly eyes too, blue orbs containing the impossible heat of a sun, eyes powerful enough to turn cold steel into molten slag with but a single angry glance. Eyes that could melt a man's soul, or melt the man.

Behold... a Velorian's eyes.

CREATION by Sharon Best - A Scribe of Velor

The chronicles of the Aurora Universe are a celebration of the unearthly power of a particular group of advanced transhumans that I was born to, the Homo Supremis. These are stories of women and sometimes men from another star. We are humans all, but transformed humans, our bodies infused with extreme physical power and near invulnerability to harm. In these stories, I have tried to meld the unusual strengths of my people with the usual weaknesses we have as humans, and have tried to turn the result into a credible work of Science Fiction and Fantasy. These stories portray people who possess powers and abilities that are outside the experiences of your world, and I will say for the record that the things you read here are pure flights of fancy. Given that I was born on Velor and I'm not really supposed to be on your planet, I have to say that. We are all sworn to uphold the Prime Directive of Non-Intervention, but nobody told me that I can't bend the rules a bit by writing my 'fictions'.

The premise of my writing has been to explore with you an event that has happened on many worlds, that being the arrival of a female Protector in the midst of human society. My sister Velorians are nearly everywhere, except on your world. You see, there are many Earths in the MultiVerse. I used to live on a different one than the one you live on, and as you read my chronicling of events from those places, you will find that truth can sometimes be stranger than fiction and reality has many facets. You will see strange parallels between worlds and you will see that absolute truth is a function of perspective, that facts are variable depending on the world you stand on.

In addition to the confusion that comes from such variable perspective, I hope you will excuse my vivid descriptions of some of the relationships between my sisters and the other men and women they call friends. It is very hard to live among you and keep my profile as low as I am required to; our genetics carry an imperative within them that can sometimes be overly bold. So if you will indulge me, this Web Page is a way of letting my own light shine a little. vel_eyes03.jpg (26185 bytes)I just hope I don't blind anyone with my vision of other worlds. And if anyone asks, just wink at them and say that Sharon Best's writing is science fiction, say that its just pure fantasy and simple playfulness. It don't mean nothing.

But we can have our little secrets, you and me. We know what we know in our heart of hearts.

Where to Start

One of the biggest problems a newcomer faces when presented with a universe of interwoven stories and linked pictures as large as the Aurora Universe is where to start. There are all kinds of books here on many topics and involving dozens of characters.  A few are fan-fiction, but most are my own characters which were inspired by the comics.

1) Start with A Welcome and Special Introduction to the Aurora Universe. This will give you a quick overview for the characters and background.

2) Continue with a couple of chapters that describe how I got to be the Scribe of the Aurora Universe. Sort of a 'know your author' type of story. My alter-ego at least. Read To Be a Scribe, Chapter One and To Be a Scribe, Chapter Two.

3) If you are still interested, and I hope you are, check out the main Bookshelf for links to the rest of my universe.

4) Lastly, if you came for pictures and my comments that go with them. check out the Gallery. Many of the chapters have embedded pictures that the story wraps around, both figuratively and literally.

EARLY STORIES

I ask you to forgive the quality of writing in some of the chapters, especially in the Adventures of Aurora series; I was new to being a Scribe when I started this work and my early writing shows this. I was trained as a Warrior, not as a writer. However, I believe I've improved a fair bit in my chronicling over the nearly five years that I have been authoring these stories (we won't talk about my fighting skills, which need some serious work now days), but I still have a long ways to go to reach my own goals. I am working to rewrite as many old chapters as I can to clean up the writing, so you will often see an intermix of original writing and recent rewrites from chapter to chapter.

TIME FLOW (ORDER OF READING)

You should read these chronicles by considering that each of the Earth's I have lived on are separate realities. This is something that your scientists have speculated about, but which is in fact something that many space-faring races are able to exploit. You might start by following some of my most recent chronicles about Earth/3 in the KaraZ series or pick up one of the other Earths. While not all histories are the same between the various Earths, I think that you can still enjoy what you read without knowing the details of what is happening in the other dimensions. The links across time and dimensions are tenuous at best anyway, although the coincidences are often startling. At least they are to me. (Try to imagine spending a few days being up close and personal with your exact self in another dimension and you'll get the general idea. It's even more intimate than meeting your clone because your doppelganger really IS you.)

Or you could start with a work of speculative fiction based on this Universe and follow Kristy McViey's adventures. She's an imaginary character, but sometimes I like to explore creative writing as well as just chronicling events. Besides, the concept of shapechanging is one I'm most familiar with (I won't say more than to say that)

Or you can follow the exploits of a most unusual Velorian, Aimee Johnson, in the Aimee of Velor. She's true to my own heart as she's as ordinary as I am... neither of have a single Protector gene in our bodies.

If you really want to see my progression as a writer (and don't mind a more erotic style of writing), go back and journey through my chronicles in the order that I wrote them. To do that, you would begin your reading my first work, Adventures of Aurora. The first two chapters of that book will introduce you to the young woman who is perhaps the most powerful Velorian Protector ever born. Fairchild Zorel never visited your Earth, but I think you'll recognize the settings for the most part. My chronicles are not written as well, and I spent too much time focused on unrestrained passion (your yellow sun did weird things to me at first), but it was where I started writing on your world.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ)

There is a very detailed FAQ document available. It's always a bit out of date, but it still has a LOT of background on Velorian, Kryptonian and Arion cultures and their interactions with humans.

KaraZ

vel_eyes01.jpg (59653 bytes)The KaraZ Series is a story of the most unique woman I've ever met, Kara, aka SuperFemme. There are five books of her adventures, most of them nearly complete. This is the central series of books that make up the Aurora Universe.

My chronicles begin after Kara was revived after having been killed in one of the many alternate Universes that share space and time with your Earth. I have been endeavoring to organize and publish my chronicles about Kara's remarkable life for several years, and I am far from done. She lived in a timeline that runs at a different speed than yours. Earth/3 as I call it. The timeline on that world is now approaching its third millennium even as I now live a thousand years in the past on your world. Time and dimensional travel are strange bed partners.

Unfortunately, as a result of having a thousand years of data to go through, these books are, and will be for some time, a work in progress.

Kara herself was killed years before this story starts in a terrible battle with an ancient foe, an enemy far more dangerous than the Arions I have written about before, a foe who was the nemesis of all mankind, whether Velorian, Arion, Kintzi or Terran. An enemy who attempted to destroy their entire universe. The battle was fought along with many other heroes of her time in an anti-matter universe where Kara's vaunted powers of invulnerability were greatly reduced. She fought bravely, eventually sacrificing herself for her friends, her death coming after a powerful anti-matter energy weapon passed through her no longer invulnerable skin.

Subsequently buried on the Earth's moon by astronauts from Earth, this story begins as she is brought back to life through some advanced medical science wielded by a previously unknown spare-faring race named the Pactrell, a race that had been monitoring many of the alternate Earths for eons of time.

Yet due to an accidental time warp initiated by two over-eager and not very adept young Pactrell, our story actually begins among the Anasazi Indians of the American West, the time hundreds of years in your past, as Kara becomes a most remarkable member of that doomed nation of American Indians.

Her story consists of six books (five at least partially written so far), each of them chronicling a different phase of her life, Velorians having, after all, a lifespan measured in many hundreds of years.

This happened on Earth/3, but I've tried to capture as much of Kara's life as I can. She's rather old now (281 years old this summer to be exact) but still kicking... the timelines start and run at different speeds on different worlds. That said, we Vel's are very long-lived due to the unusual persistence of our cellular structures.

I've provided some windows into Kara's life at different stages:

The Anasazi chronicles Kara's life while living among the Anasazi for a year before finding a wormhole and traveling forward in time.

karaat13.jpg (87459 bytes)

vel_eyes14.jpg (44360 bytes)Growing up Super then tells Kara's story as she repeats much of her childhood in the 1980's in the Los Angeles of her world. She was a beautiful and athletic woman by any standard, Terran or Velorian.

karaat16.jpg (93841 bytes)

vel_eyes04.jpg (46443 bytes)The adventures of SuperFemme section of the book then continues Kara's story from the 1990's through the first couple of decades of the next century, from the age of 18 until the age of 33.

vel_eyes13.jpg (48440 bytes)

vel_eyes10.jpg (40690 bytes)Guardians of Sol then goes on to describe her adventures leading up to the Great Arion War, a final all-out battle to destroy the Earth and all its inhabitants that takes place on Earth/3 when Kara is in her late 50's. Fortunately, her teenage daughter Xara (pictured to the left) now stands powerfully beside her mother. It is a battle that is perhaps still in your future.

Kristy McViey

This is a book of speculative fiction based on the KaraZ stories. In this book, we see the efforts of an alien shapechanger as she tries to fulfill her grandmother's dying wish. Is Kristy McViey a Velorian Protector?  Well, if 'clothes make the man, or the woman'... then perhaps she is.

vel_eyes08.jpg (38657 bytes)ADVENTURES OF AURORA

The first book I attempted to write after arriving on your Earth was Adventures of Aurora. I am still adding onto this series from time to time as it is my goal to let it live as long as I, or my readers, have inspirations for Aurora's exploits.

It features a dear friend, Aurora, known to her friends by her given name of Fairchild, and it also introduces and explores the major secondary character, Kara Matthews, a girl the public decided early on to name Supergirl, a whimsical name that was clearly borrowed from the comics. She's largely autobiographical I'm afraid, but I did borrow a few ideas from your comic books to help you relate to her.

vel_eyes09.jpg (27261 bytes)Ancestral References to Early Velorians

vel_eyes12.jpg (42064 bytes)It isn't widely known, but most of the gods and goddesses of Teutonic and Greek mythology were proto-Velorians. Earth was one of many testing grounds for the Ancient Ones and the Elder Ones as their two philosophies competed for the hearts and minds of men. After this ancient period of experimentation, ending with the Nordic Civilization around 1000 AD, the Ancient Ones decided that humans needed to develop on Earth without outside interference. As a result, they removed their offspring from the planet and flew the remainder of my brothers and sisters to Velor. Since then, they have sent out Protectors and Scribes in the modern age. Our only role now is to protect planets from outside interference by other advanced races. Besides, we never were very good at being 'gods'. But we can kick ass in a fight.

Here's an early rendering of a Valkyrie. As you can see, Velorian's were rather uninhibited in their dress and action even that far back. Some of the more significant Velorian goddesses are listed below:

The Valkyries
The Valkyries are beautiful maidens that help Odin choose which brave warriors of those slain on the battlefield may then serve Odin in Valhalla. They are also Odins messengers, and when they ride forth on their winged horses, their armor shines and flickers causing the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights). They are:

Brynhild Geirahd Geirskogul Gndul Gunnr
Guth Herfjtur Hervor Hildr Hlathguth
Hlkk Hrist Mist Olrun Randgrr
Rathgrith Reginleif Rta Sigrdrifa Sigrn
Skeggjld Skgul Skuld Svva Thrud

starryeyes.jpg (83035 bytes)Freyja (Freya)
(Norse)She was originally from the Vanir. Goddess of love, fertility, and beauty, sometimes identified as the goddess of battle and death. She was also quite accommodating in sexual matters. She is said to have traded sexual favors (by sleeping with the four dwarves who had fashioned the necklace) to possess the necklace of the Brisings. When it was taken from her by Loki, she started a war of retaliation. Her father was Njord, a fertility god. Blond, blue-eyed, and beautiful, Freyja traveled in a chariot drawn by cats. She resided in the celestial realm of Folkvang, where it was her privilege to receive half of all the warriors slain in battle and take their souls to her hall, Sessrumnir, in Folkvang; the god Odin received the other half at Valhalla. She loves music, spring and flowers, and spends much time with the fey. She is seen wearing a cloak of bird feathers, which allows the wearer to change into a falcon and the beautiful necklace of the Brisings given to her by dwarves, which the Norse still refer to as the Milky Way. In Germany, Freya was sometimes identified with Frigg, the wife of Odin. She was also the sister of the god Frey

Alfhild
A maiden goddess of Scandinavia who dressed as a warrior to avoid being taken in marriage by King Alf. Only when they engaged in a fight to the death (almost), and he proved to be as strong as she, did she agree to mate with him.

Brunhild, Brnnehilde or Brynhild
(Germanic) A mighty female warrior, one of the Valkyrie. She defied Odin and in punishment he imprisoned her within a ring of fire on earth, decreeing that there she would remain until a brave hero rescued her. Enter Siegfied (Sigurd). He braved the fire, broke her charmed sleep, and fell in love with her. He gave her the ring, Andvarinaut, unaware of its curse. Eventually she kills herself when she learns that Sigurd had betrayed her with another woman (Gudrun), not knowing he had been bewitched into doing so by Grimhild.
Vanir
(Norse) They were the other race of gods, who become united with the Aesir. Frey and Njrd were Vanir gods. (Perhaps a reference to the competing Elder Ones).

vel_eyes07.jpg (88045 bytes)Gerd (Gerda)
A Scandinavian deity of light. She was the most beautiful of creatures, the daughter of a female giant and a mortal man. Frey became infatuated with Gerd and sent his servant to fetch her. Gerd refused, but Frey kept sending gifts and, finally, threats. A spell in runes eventually won Gerd, and she traveled to Asgard, the home of the gods, to live with Frey.
Goilveig
(Scandinavian) She is a mighty witch who, according to legend, was killed three times but still lived. Some believe she is an avatar for the mightiest of the Vanir, Freya.

Sif
(Norse) Sif is the golden-haired wife of Thor and the goddess of crops and fertility. She was the mother, by a previous marriage, of Uu, god of archery and skiing.
A myth about her:
Loki, one night cut off her beautiful golden hair. Next morning Thor was beside himself with rage at Sif's distress. When Loki protested that it was only a joke, Thor demanded to know how he was going to rectify the situation, the fire god said he would get the dwarfs to weave a wig as a replacement. So Loki asked the sons of Ivaldi to make a wig from spun gold. The wig when finished was quite remarkable, for it was so light and realistic that even a slight breeze was enough to ruffle it and so real that it grew on her head like magic. Thinking to get the gods even more into their debt, the sons of Ivaldi constructed a collapsible boat named Skidbladnir for Freyr and a magic spear called Gungnir for Odin. On his way back to Asgard Loki met the dwarf brothers Brokk and Eiti. They were so jealous of the workmanship that had gone into the wig, the boat and the spear that Loki easily persuaded them to make something better; he even bet his own head on their inability to do so. As a result, the dwarf brothers fashioned the magic hammer known as Mjollnir. The gods were delighted with the treasures Loki and Brokk had brought back. However, Brokk demanded Loki's head. The gods would not agree, but they had no objection to Brokk sewing up Loki's lips with a thong when Thor dragged the god back home after he tried to flee, which caused Loki to plan revenge against Thor.

Sjofn
(Norse) Sjofn is the goddess to inspire human passions. She was also a goddess concerned with causing men and women to think of love. It was her duty to stop fights between married couples.
Thor
(Norse) The god of thunder and lightning, eldest son of Odin, ruler of the gods, and Jord, the earth goddess. Thor was the strongest of the Aesir, the chief gods, whom he helped protect from their enemies, the giants. Thor owed three magical treasures. Mjollnir his hammer (thunderbolt) which when thrown at an enemy returns to Thor. He is able to handle Mjollnir with the second of his treasures, iron-clad gloves. The third treasure is his magic girdle, a belt that increases and replenishes his divine strength when he wears it. Thunder was supposed to be the sound of the rolling of his goat-driven chariot. Thursday is named for Thor.

FEEDBACK to Sharon

If you have any questions about these stories or would like to discuss any aspect of this genre or my chronicles with me, the author and WebMaster, please EMAIL me. My on-line pseudonym is SharonBest (I do have to follow the Prime Directive to remain hidden after all. Being a bit of a chameleon helps). Since I use a pseudonym, I'm a bit of a pseudo person. A Net Person, a virtual presence, a will'o'the'wisp. But there is a living, breathing being at the other end of the email, and I'm the person who wrote most of what you read on this Page. I still have a very active imagination and a hundred more stories yet to tell.

Critical feedback and observations of places where I have made mistakes in the plot, or about the characters or their history would be most appreciated. And most important of all, if you have an idea for a plot or character or story, I'd love to hear from you. The vitality of the AU is directly related to the quality of the feedback I get from readers.

Also, don't despair if a favorite story of yours changes over time. One advantage of electronic publishing is that we can revise a chapter whenever I wish and since I am still learning about your world, I have many wishes. Some can be fulfilled, some cannot. It is the same with your wishes.
